Senator Coltart has been active in maintaining open lines of communication with his electors from the start of his political career. Through numerous report-back meetings he became increasingly aware of the desperate circumstances of a number of individuals.
Zimbabwe’s economy is in crisis and the country is now battling an official annual inflation rate of 231 million percent and unemployment of more than 80 percent. According to the UN, it is likely that more than 5 million people – nearly half the population – will need food assistance in the first quarter of 2009.
In 2002, Senator Coltart began a trust fund called the Bulawayo South Development Trust to do his utmost to ease the prevalent suffering in Bulawayo South, now stretching to the entire Khumalo Constituency. The Fund has functioned reactively, responding to the pleas of the desperate and disadvantaged within his constituency. It has been active in assisting the poorer communities of Bulawayo, with its focus extending beyond the here-and-now of “aid” to an investment in the skills and livelihood of the people.
